Sunscreen is a topical product applied to the skin to protect it from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation can cause sunburn, premature aging of the skin, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens work by either absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the sun’s rays before they can penetrate the skin.

There are two main types of ultraviolet radiation that sunscreen protects against:

  1. UVA: These rays penetrate deep into the skin and can cause premature aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer.
  2. UVB: These rays primarily affect the outer layer of the skin and are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer.

Sunscreens are typically labeled with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating, which indicates the level of protection against UVB radiation. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection. It’s essential to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.

It’s recommended to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating. Sunscreen should be a crucial part of everyone’s daily skincare routine, regardless of skin type or complexion, to protect against sun damage and maintain healthy skin.
